A GUIDE TO IV THERAPY

_

IV therapy (or intravenous therapy) is a widely used method in medicine for blood transfusions and to deliver fluids, medications and nutrition directly into a person’s bloodstream for a long time now. Attempts at providing intravenous therapy have been recorded as early as the late 1400s. Still, the practice did not become widespread until the mid-1950s after developing safe, effective use techniques. Lately, the medical profession is beginning to come around to the idea of IV therapy being used not just for treating illness but also for optimising health. As it’s become more popular and readily available in recent years, IV therapy using IV drips is also becoming known for a broader spectrum of benefits; from quick hangover relief to boosting the immune system.

Today, IV drip therapy treatments are not just for hospital patients. An increasing number of health-conscious people use IV therapy to get the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and medications they need to feel better and keep their bodies functioning properly. But what exactly is IV therapy, and what do you need to know if you decide to give it a try?

What is an IV drip?

An intravenous or IV drip delivers fluids and medications directly into the bloodstream through a vein using a fluid infusion of a set amount and duration. The drip rate can be adjusted to control the speed of administration

How do IV drips work?

An IV drip delivers the essential nutrients and fluids directly into the bloodstream, bypassing your digestive tract. When supplements are taken orally, they have to be absorbed in the stomach and then transformed into useable forms by the liver. These processes lead to losses and waste of vitamins and nutrients as the absorption rate depends on your gut and liver health, your deficiencies, and how well your hormones are balanced, among other things.

By bypassing your digestive system, IV therapy ensures the maximum possible absorption and effectiveness of nutrients entering the body. Intravenous administration of vital nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, amino acids and antioxidants achieves a far higher concentration and absorption of these nutrients compared with taking oral supplements.

What to expect when having my IV drip?

A nutrient IV drip is a low risk procedure that many of our clients find is a relaxing and enjoyable experience in comfort of your own home.

During the procedure, your practitioner
will insert a cannula into your vein, usually in the crook of your arm. They will then attach a tube with an IV bag containing vitamin fluids, which then drip down the tube directly into your vein.

How long does an IV therapy drip take?

Once your IV nutrient mixture is carefully selected and formulated by your practitioner and you are relaxing in your own lounge, our fully qualified and experienced nurse practitioner will administer the IV drip.

The therapy lasts for around 45 minutes and you’ll feel an immediate boost. Typically, the effects become fully noticeable after 24 -72 hours.

Benefits IV therapy

Bypasses the digestive tract and transports hydration and nutrients directly to your bloodstream. A vitamin drip is a specific type of IV therapy that efficiently administers vitamins, minerals, hydration, and medications to the body through an IV drip. IV therapy offers almost 100% absorption (while oral supplements offer 30-80%), IV treatments ensure that cells receive the nutrients they need to thrive. This optimal cell function promotes the health of a number of the systems within your body.

Benefits of a vitamin C IV drip?

The main benefit of getting vitamin C through IV drip therapy is that it bypasses the gastrointestinal route. Taking high levels of Vitamin C orally can be challenging as you reach bowel tolerance quite quickly which can lead to unpleasant side effects ie diarrhoea. With IV therapy you can achieve high blood concentration safely, without any side effects (1).

Vitamin C is involved in countless cellular pathways within our body: it’s an antioxidant, an antihistamine (2), it has anti-inflammatory properties (3) and it’s even involved in DNA formation (4). As a result, Vitamin C is included in most of our infusions, but also available as a standalone therapy.
